Ipswich Cup c/o Sunday Mail David Kapernick
Nearly 20 years on and in different roles Lloyd Brazier nearly captures his second Ipswich Cup. In 1998 Lloyd rode the all the way winner Burglar of Bamff to pinch victory in the Ipswich Cup by a half head. 19 years later he saddled Cold Start as a trainer to race in very simular fashion but to only go down in a photo beaten a nose.
Cold Start went into the Ipswich Cup this year, after being targeted for the same race last year where connections thought he was a great chance of taking out the race, but a track that was as hard as concrete that year foiled our plans victory when cold start battered his heals on the unforgiving surface, and was a beaten horse after he had only gone 1200m.
Yesterdays result even though 12 months late was a well devised plan to take out the Ipswich feature race and proved we wheren't far off the mark in targeting that race to Cold Starts first black type win.
Rachel Mason got Cold Start out of the barriers in trademark fashion, where she took Cold Start to a commanding lead and approaching the 700m she began to take the rest of the field off the bit and to get them chasing in an attempt to ruin their sprint over the final few hundred metres.
In a nail biting and emotional finish where many had thought he lasted for victory, he was beaten a nose and was extremely gallant in defeat.
Connections and Cold Start will now go onto Caloundra for his home town Caloundra Cup, a race that he finished 3rd in last year and a race he will be going into in great form and fettle.
